Tarpon, Silver Kings, Cuff, Sabalo Real, Silverfish - by what ever name you call them, the
Tarpon is the undisputed king of inshore fishing in warmer waters.
Tarpon are actual a member of the herring family, but don't let that
fool you! The awesome power, long runs and famous aerobatics make tarpon one of the
ultimate challenges for a fisherman, especially fly fishermen. Whether you're sight
casting to cruising fish on a clear water flats, blind casting a mangrove channel or
working deep in a river mouth you'll NEVER forget your first hook up with a Tarpon. But
just because you hooked him doesn't mean you'll get him in. That's why Tarpon fishermen
speak about how many fish they "jumped" and not landed.
Below is a collection of tarpon flies tied in a variety of
popular colors. As a rule-of-thumb, bright colors are used in clear waters while darker
patterns are used in darker waters. This is, of course, NOT written in stone. You could
certainly find the fish preferring a dark fly in clear conditions or wanting a brighter
fly in darker waters. So it's best to carry a variety.
Most patterns are now available on
